The class emptied out, leaving just Ian, Mrs. Tanner, and me. Mrs. Tanner motioned for us to come to the front as she remained at her desk. Just after Ian had handed in his paper—and was asked to stay behind as well—he’d pressed the word “why” into my back. I’d been smart enough not to answer, but I certainly had my suspicions.

We stood in front of her desk. I noticed that she was holding my test in her hand.

“I guess you’re both wondering why I asked you two to stay behind,” she said.

“Kinda curious,” Ian said calmly.

For somebody with filtration issues he certainly could be cool in the face of danger. I guess in some ways he’d managed to get himself in so much trouble over the years that he’d become used to dealing with it. Practice makes perfect.

With her finger, Mrs. Tanner started to tap out her answer. She had what Morse Code operators called a “clumsy handle,” but it was pretty clear what she was spelling out: M-O-R-S-E.

Ian looked as though he’d been punched in the gut, which was how I felt as well.

“So you two were communicating in Morse Code, is that correct?” she asked.

“Yeah, we do that all the time. It’s just us talking,” I lied. “We do it so nobody knows what we’re talking about.”

“I knew,” she said.

“How did you know?” I asked.

“Girl Scouts. It was a long time ago but I remember things,” she said.

“My therapist encourages me to do it so I don’t say so many stupid things out loud and get in trouble,” Ian explained. “You can talk to her if you want and she’ll tell you.”

“It wasn’t you tapping out the message. It was Sam. I looked at your test,” she said, holding it up. “Nowhere is there a sequence of four questions with the correct answers being A, B, B, A. What exactly were you trying to communicate to Ian?”

Ian laughed, which seemed to surprise both of us. “You caught us,” he said. “This is sort of embarrassing. Do you want to tell her, Sam, or should I?”

“Why don’t you,” I suggested, since I had no idea what he was going to say.

“Sure. You know all about the promposals that are going around, right?” Ian asked Mrs. Tanner.

“I don’t know all about them, but I certainly know of them. It’s hard not to notice. Go on.”

“Sam is going to be making one—”

“You are?” Mrs. Tanner sounded surprised.

“Yeah, Ian and Brooke are helping me arrange it.”

“Strange, but continue,” she said. “Explain how this relates to what we’re talking about.”

“Well, most of them come with musical accompaniment, and before class I asked Sam to tell me which group he thinks should be featured, and he told me he was thinking it over. We were having this discussion about whether it should be something current or something retro. During the test he told me which group he wanted. It’s ABBA.”

“ABBA, as in the Swedish group from the ’70s?” Mrs. Tanner asked.

“Whose music, while
